4 Frustrating Aspects of Car-Ownership (And Their Solutions)

Owning a car should be fun and freeing, but it doesn’t always feel that way. While it’s unlikely that you’d voluntarily give up your vehicle and switch to public transport, there are times when owning a car can often feel like it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

While some aspects of car-ownership are frustrating, there are two positive things to remember. The first is that these frustrations are mostly universal, so you’re not the only one going through them. The other is that there’s nearly always a solution.

We’ve put together a list of some of our most commonly seen frustrating elements, as well as guidance on what you can do to minimize their impact.

Frequent Breakdowns

Your car should offer full flexibility, but it can’t do that if it’s not working. At that point, it becomes an expensive weight around your neck.

Even new cars can run into issues. When they occur, it’s usually a scramble to get the car fixed as quickly as possible, for the lowest price. The best approach is to manage issues while they’re still small. Sticking to your vehicle’s maintenance schedule and being aware of early warning signs — such as dashboard lights coming on — can go a long way towards preventing yourself from finding yourself in a situation where your car won’t start.

Being Locked Out Of Your Vehicle

You’ve finished work. You cannot wait to get home. You go into your pockets to get your car keys, and…they’re not there. That can be a stressful situation to find yourself in, especially when you’re far from home. Having the number of a reliable car locksmith will ensure that you can quickly regain access to your vehicle with minimal disruption. It’s also recommended to ensure you have spare copies of your keys in a secure location, such as at a friend’s place.

Commute Traffic

Consistently finding yourself in bumper-to-bumper traffic on your way to/from work can be soul-destroying, and it’s inevitable that at some point it’ll begin to feel highly frustrating.

Many people assume that sitting in traffic is just an inevitability, but you do have a few options at your disposal. Setting off for work a little earlier or later can make a big difference to how much traffic you run into. Another option is to look for an alternative route. It’s possible that there’s a route that takes slightly longer, but which has no traffic.

If there’s no obvious solution, then change how you pass the time during your commute. You’ll likely look at it more favourably if you’re spending the time listening to podcasts, talking to friends, or learning a language.

Rising Costs

Car expenses seem to go up, up, up, without ever truly coming back down again. Taking a smart approach to car expenses, such as shopping around for insurance and improving your MPG (miles per gallon) rate, can make a meaningful difference to your car-related outgoings. It’s also worth remembering that you don’t always need to drive; sometimes, it makes more sense to take public transport than to deal with fuel and parking costs.
